My work consists of both figurative and abstract images where the line between the two is not always clear-cut.

Sculptor Henry Moore said it best: "Art is the expression of imagination, not the reproduction of reality."

The work I have been doing since the beginning of 2004 is about the reinterpretation of original source material rather than photorealism.

Imagery from the real world is the inspirational source material for the paintings. The current work uses atomic bomb explosions and volcanic eruptions. I paint using a mixture of traditional painterly techniques and more modern ones where I throw the paint at the canvas in a controlled manner. I have sought to tie in politics, religion and something of the nature of man in the titles I have given the various pieces.

Charles Sheeler said: "Photography is [the subject] seen from the eyes outward, painting from the eyes inward. Photography records inalterably the single image, while painting records a plurality of images wilfully directed by the artist."

Photographer Elliot Porter said: "A true work of art is the creation of love, love for the subject first and for the medium second."

I am wishing to make the dark appealing and thought provoking. I seek to find beauty in dark places.

About Cantons & The Work

I was raised in London by Spanish and French parents; this I believe has allowed me to draw on a multicultural background for my inspiration.

Photography is about exploring and recording the world about me whilst in the paintings I have been creating since the beginning of 2004 I am reinterpreting original source material rather than a photorealistic picture. I paint using a mixture of traditional painterly techniques and more modern ones where I throw the paint at the canvas in a controlled manner.

There are currently five ongoing series that depict the world around us but not in a way we are necessarily accustomed to seeing.

The Way of All Things recreates the cycle of the seasons as one dies and a new one births. Each painting is created over several canvases. Technically the work is about colour and texture, a representation of the season and it’s mood.

In Secret World I am looking at viruses as they appear under the gaze of electron microscopes. The diseases enlarged to this degree are suddenly no longer the invisible enemy, they have character, they have personality – they are at once intriguing and horrifying.

New World Order series takes its source material from atomic bomb explosions. The themes of New World Order are various depending on the painting. Atomic explosions are a great depiction of both destruction and creation. I have sought to tie in politics, religion and something of the nature of man in the titles I have given the various pieces. The explosion is the creation and release of huge energy – it destroys all that was before it. It becomes a marker after which everything is different in comparison to how it was beforehand. This can in turn be applied to all aspects of our lives, behaviours and relationships.

In The Nature of Man series. I have sought to illustrate different points of human existence with different volcanic eruptions.

How can best convey what I think, see or feel? The question has led me to believe that whilst an artist can choose to embrace just one medium to create his or her art, I wish to be open to work with not just paint but also with any medium necessary. Additionally, since my work is rooted in the figurative, I have chosen to take artistic licence with my subjects over the portrayal of the final image.

I wish to make the dark appealing and thought provoking. To bring light to dark areas and discover what they can mean to us.

I seek to find beauty in dark places.
